             town seems to think its "Dame Van Winkle" to blame for the family squables for he was a .
             favorite with all the town woman and children. "in a word Rip was ready attending to .
             anybody's business but his own; but as to doing family duty, and keeping his farm in order, .
             he found it impossible"(page#451).I feel that by "Rip" rebelling his family Irving is .
             symbolizing the loss respect for America and giving loyalty to his own people.
             "But his wife kept continually dinning on his ears about his idleness, his carelessness, .
             and the ruin he was bring to his family. Morning, noon, and night, her tongue was .
             incessantly going, and every thing he said or did was sure to produce a torrent of household .
             eloquence"(page#451). Because of his wife's nagging "Rip Van Winkle" would escape his .
             duties and go to town to sit in front of the tavern with friends. To me Irving seems to be .
             symbolizing England not giving America their freedom. Just as would Rip Van Winkle .
             would do everything possible to escape his complaining wife.
             When "Rip Van Winkle" awoke from his twenty year sleep he found that everything .
             was different, the towns people were excited with anticipation of their new self government.
             Nothing had seemed the way it was. Before Rip fell asleep the all the towns people were .
