THE TACHI YOKUT TRIBE

There are about 50 tribes known as Yokuts, each of which started with 300 plus members. The tribes have settled in areas from the San Joaquin River on to the Bakersfield, California borders. Interestingly, each tribe had its own unique language, nuances and different housing choices. For example, the groups living in the foothills constructed huts, primarily made from acorns and roots of the tule ( ) , near the streams. Those settled more in the central valley developed larger homes in permanent villages near the rivers. Lastly classified within the Yokuts are the Lake People. These tribes live in the higher mountain region and travel continuously, mostly living in tent-like homes and sleeping on mats. These lake tents were long and could house a dozen or more families. The Yokut tribes varied in the living arrangements based on the compliments of their natural surroundings.              An interview of Mike Sisco, retired tribal chief, provided a higher member's account of the tribe in earlier years and those living on and off the reservation today. He had an overall disappointment in the changes of his Indian culture, and feeling the earlier years of his tribal practice was of peace and nature colliding, he now that young tribal members rarely practice the culture - other than to "party," which has become a problem on the reservation. Overall money has destroyed the values of his younger family members and of those who seek his counsel. Some of the traditions that the Yokuts currently practice include traditional funeral ceremonies, sweat lodges, the harvesting of salt grass and the annual pow-wow gatherings. Yearly, on March 1st, the annual spiritual gathering takes place on the reservation which renews hopes and spiritual cleanliness of the tribe.
