Characterization of Mustapha M

Brave New World tells the story of a futuristic earth in which thought is controlled.
People accept this because they have been taught their entire lives that society before Brave New World was chaotic and appalling; people were uncontrolled, belligerent, and grew old, thereby becoming malcontent in their existence. However, that was the past. Now the World is peaceful, the people told what to think so that no unhappy thoughts manifest and those that do are offset by soma. The most intelligent dictate what can and cannot be taught. Mustapha Mond is one such leader; one of his duties being to read proposed literature and decide whether or not it would be caustic to the order. Even so, in spite of his high position in the system, Mond wishes that people could think deeper and explore more tantalizing avenues, but understands that for the good of the public limits must be kept. The author brings these values to light with several literary techniques. In the passage, Aldous Huxley uses diction, repetition, and syntax to characterize the accepting and conventional but far too intelligent Mustapha Mond.
When writing about Mond, the author uses technical and intelligent words to convey his feelings. In one sentence Mond is written as thinking "the idea that might easily decondition the more unsettled minds among the higher castes- (lines 14-15) .This shows his articulacy. He speaks in the same manner, and an idea presented in discussion easily, eloquently, and with an attitude of correctness is more quickly believed than if it said in a forced and searching way. As a result Mond's ideas are readily accepted by all, even if they are wrong. His further use of statements such as "potentially subversive," "masterly piece of work," "human sphere," and "enlargement of knowledge" prove his intelligence in addition to driving home the beliefs he represents (lines 7, 11-12, 18-19, 21). By implementing clever diction when writing about Mond, the author helps distinguish his personality.
