prohibition

During the 1920's, there were many opinions and arguments about banning alcohol in the United States. In consequence to that, alcohol was made illegal in the U.S. but it only lasted about thirteen years. It caused too many crimes and people always found a way to obtain it; they could go to "speakeasies" or even make their own. Eventually, congress and the rest of the nation decided that banning alcohol was actually hurting the U.S. rather than making it a better nation so they decided to repeal the amendment, making alcohol legal again. Nowadays, there are set rules for alcohol but the new issue is about drugs. Should we make some drugs legal or should we leave it as is? People all over the world are using drugs, such as marijuana, but they are doing it illegally. They are selling it on the streets and even in schools but no one has made a point to enforce that it is illegal. Sure they go to jail and have other punishments, but that won't stop others. Just like in the 1920's, people were drinking alcohol illegally and some of them did got caught but look what happened. Alcohol was made legal again because everyone was still drinking it and it was just causing too much trouble.
There has been controversy about legalizing certain drugs for many years. For example, people have been smoking marijuana throughout history but for the past thirty years it has become a real problem. Kids start smoking before they even enter high school. Some even become addicted to it so that they always have to have it. If it keeps up, they start to overlook what really matters in their lives at that age, like school and families. Their only ambition is to get a hold of more marijuana. Yes, there are some kids who are able to balance getting good grades in school and smoking but there are always those others who will rearrange their priorities. A few think that marijuana is the "gateway drug". What this means is that once people have been smoking pot, they may end up bored with it and would want to experiment with new drugs such as cocaine or even something as horrifying as heroine.
