Michael Jackson: Dancing to Th

But aside from those two moves, the single most well known dance that Michael has popularized is the Moonwalk.
The Moonwalk is said to have been created from both Michael's personal style and the style of break-dancers he observed on street corners. He would privately practice the dance move but didn't perform before an audience. He finally decided to do so at the "Motown 25" show. He didn't tell anyone about his plans. After he and his brothers performed, he began to speak and was handed a hat from backstage as he wore a sparkling black jacket and the signature white glove. Then, all of a sudden the beat of "Billie Jean" sounded and the crowd went wild. He performed what was said to be "the most electrifying five minutes of the evening." (qtd. in Nicholson) Not only did Jackson introduce the Moonwalk that night, but he also showed his famous "spin, freeze, and stand on toes" move. To the millions of viewers, Michael had been truly discovered by this performance.
His dance performance had impressed even he best of dancers. He received a call from Fred Astaire, one of Jackson's heroes. Along with Astaire, dancers Gene Kelly and Sammy Davis Jr. praised his routine. It seemed that from that night, children everywhere began to imitate Michael's unique style. .
Even with all his skill, he still had more to learn, and Broadway was the place to learn. In 1979, Michael auditioned and acquired the part of Scarecrow in The Wiz and had the chance to work alongside of Diana Ross. .
"Making The Wiz was an education for me on so many levels," said Jackson. "As a recording artist, I felt like an old pro, but the film world was completely new to me." (qtd. in Nicholson) The choreography of the film allowed Michael to discover his uncanny ability to see a move once and perform it. This, of course, did cause conflict between him and the other actors, but Diana Ross had informed him about it so he pretended to have trouble learning the dances.
