Though generally well-intentioned, each member of the lodge has different motives for doing things, and they are sometimes hidden behind false pretenses. .
Lisa, a once innocent bystander, becomes dragged into this lifestyle after being seduced ( both sexually and mentally) by Cyril. He leads her to believe that he recognized her potential to be a great thinker and her ability to comprehend that which he and his order hold so sacred. Lisa goes along because of several reasons. First of all, she is desperate for adventure. She has been living with Livinia King, a corrupt ballet dancer who drags her around on tours with her and leads her to a life of cheap and sleazy sin. When she meets Cyril, it is her nature to be immediately intrigued by his mysteriousness, and she discovers within herself, a deep and exotic passion for him. She follows these wild feelings and embarks on a mission of great importance, or so she believes. Her central motivation is her love for Cyril. When things get rough and she would like nothing more then to go back to her life, she realizes she cannot, because of her eternal devotion to him. He tells her that she is participating in a great experiment to invoke a perfect soul into a baby that they will conceive. She believes him and pledges loyalty to the Order. However, Cyril has different plans.
Cyril Grey once belonged to the order of the Black Lodge. He is a very good magician and he fooled Douglas into believing in his loyalty. When the time came, Cyril was able to betray Douglas in such a way, that the Black Lodge was nearly completely destroyed and there was little left to Douglas" power. This in turn led to Douglas" intense hatred of Cyril. He would like nothing more then to destroy him. It has become an intense battle between them. Though it seems like it is between The Order and the Black Lodge, it is really solely between Douglas and Cyril.
