The Giver

The book that I chose to read was "The Giver", by Lois Lowry. In this book, the Giver, an old man gives all the memories of a world such as ours to a boy named Jonas. At the age of twelve the children of the community become adults. A ceremony takes place every December that acknowledges this change in front of the entire community. Each "adult" received a job assignment. Each of them except Jonas, he, instead, had been chosen to become the next Receiver of Memory, the most honorable potion in the community. .
In this world there is no color, love, or twins, and the babies and children are bred by special people who have the job of birthmother. They then are adopted away. Everybody in the town has a special but awkward job. .
The Giver tells Jonas of a place such as our normal world. After Jonas learns of the world before, he becomes anxious to escape and discover if there is a color outside world in which there is love, and normal families. The more visions that Jonas receives, the more painful they become. He also begins to become more and more anxious about discovering what is beyond his dull and controlled town. .
There are many good and bad things that happened in this book. Some of the good things are that hardly anyone gets hurt. When people get hurt, they take a pill and the pain goes away immediately. No one ever breaks bones or anything. There are no criminals and there are no locks on any homes or buildings. Another good thing is that everyone knows who everyone is. The community is very small with only a few hundred people. There are hardly ever any visitors from outside the community. All the people are provided with homes, jobs, and food.
Some more bad things are that there are lots of rules and none of them can be broken or else whoever broke it is punished or released. Only the receiver knows anything about the past. They get all the memories from the previous receiver.
