abuse

Abuse is found in many relationships across the world. In many, the abuse is so subtle that it is not noticable until it is too late and the abused person is too weak mentally to help him or herself. In other relationships, the abuse is more obvious; bruises can speak for themselves. In Danielle Steel's Journey, Madeleine Hunter has suffered from a lifetime of abuse and constant unhappiness. This is evident through the actions of the characters of Jack Hunter, Bobby Joe, and her father. Jack Hunter uses his subtle, psychological attacks on Maddy; Bobby Joe uses force and extreme violence; and Madeleine witnessing her father abuse her mother every night. .
Firstly, the abuse Maddy witnessed her father give to her mother also caused Maddy to suffer throughout her life. Maddy's father would beat his wife the same as Bobby Joe had beaten Maddy. She tells Bill Alexander how "he would beat her everynight, as though she deserved it all" (Steel, 188). Maddy has grown up thinking that the abuse that she received/witnessed was all her fault and deserved. It is believed that the abuser wants the person to believe that it is their fault so if they try to accuse the abuser of this, they will put the blame on the person being abused so that person looks crazy. .
Maddy continues her story of her past to Bill after an argument with Jack: "And sometimes, if my mother wasn't home, he"d beat me and my sisters and blames us for everything. I don't know what it is, but all my life, I've dealt with men like him" (Steel Pg190). Maddy has had a history of the men in her life being dominant, controlling and abusive towards her. She is attracted to and attracts these kinds of men because their type is all she's ever known her whole life. It is very like human nature to run back to the things that not necessarily comfort you, but give u a sense of knowing and where your place is in the situation. Maddy feels as though she needs to be told how bad she is and how worthless she is because pain and torture are all she's ever known.
