Night - Book of Dispair

The book Night is a story by Elie Wiesel and his experiences in the death camps during the holocaust. Is Night a story of hope or despair? Night is a story of despair because throughout the book Elie lost so many things that it brought him down. .
Elie continually prayed before entering the death camps. He prays because "Man raises himself toward god by the questions he asks him" (Wiesel 2). He prays also because he has hope that god will stop the war that is coming oh so close to his home. During his time in the death camp Elie loses his faith. He lost his faith because "The Eternal, lord of the universe, The All-Powerful and Terrible, was silent." (Wiesel 31), during this mass destruction of their race. This shows how low of a point he is at. For some one to lose their faith when just weeks earlier he wanted to study god is very bad. This proves that the reaction of the camp is in despair because a lot people lost faith in their God. .
Many of the prisoners in Auschwitz lost hope and tried to escape their prison of death. They would try many different ways to accomplish this but every one was very unsuccessful. The prisoners that tried to escape did not care that when they tried to leave two other prisoners would also be slaughtered. This shows that they lost all possible hope and did not think that they would make it out no matter what. A lot of people would try to escape because they thought that there was no hope in mankind. Prisoners would even throw themselves upon an electric fence because it would be a much quicker and painless death. Many people thought that Hitler was going to accomplish what he set out to do. If you had hope you would not think this way. .
Everyone in Auschwitz was always faced with death. Every day death would be staring at you. Every one would be asking them selves "are we going to make it." This would leave little room for hope so despair would set in.
