There are both advantages and disadvantages when it comes to horror movies. In this short essay both the advantages and disadvantages will be discussed. .
Horror is a very popular genre. It is actually quite bizarre. Why do people watch these movies? Most of them can be very scary and the repercussions are often nightmares and edginess. Naturally it is not everybody that feels this way, but even though few will admit it, watching a horror movie is not always a pleasant experience. The most discussed topic talking about horror movies is probably the effect they have on children. Some experts think that it can be damaging for a child to watch these so called horror movies. There is a risk that some children will reflect the things they see in the movies to their own lives. At this early age they are not always able to tell wrong from right. There are various examples concerning this matter. E.g.: Two young boys both 10 years old killed a two-year-old child. This took place in Liverpool 1993. It is possible that horror movies are partly responsible for this horrifying act. It is known that the two boys had previously seen a horror movie where a child had been killed almost exactly as they did it. Of course it is very rare that horror movies influence children but under the right circumstances the movies can indeed be injurious to one's mental state.
Why do people watch horror movies? This question is in fact very complicated. Maybe some people just like to be scared once in a while. It is not the actual movie experience that attracts people. It is how you feel afterwards. When the fear is gone and you can relax again. You realize that your own existence really is not that awful. The terror in the movie is far worse, so through horror movies you can in some twisted way improve your own being.
