Butterfly." Rene Gallimard represents the French or West and Song represents China or East. When Rene Gallimard is first introduced to us in the play we already know something is wrong because he's in a prison cell and he has a recollection of people making fun of him. As we go back in time to a younger point in his life we find that he is a somewhat successful diplomat of French descent stationed in China. When we are first introduced to Song Liling at the Peking Opera House, she seems to be a good actress, but somewhat modest and very passive. When the two main characters meet it takes a little persuasion on each other's part for the two to connect together, but they do. It seems in the beginning of there relationship that Gallimard is the "typical man" or oppressor of the relationship, Pinkerton from the story "Madame Butterfly," and Song still is very modest and passive, Butterfly also from the story "Madame Butterfly." Gallimard in a point to prove that he controls the relationship, and to for once in his life prove to Marc and himself that he can be a "Pinkerton," he does not see Song for six weeks, thinking when he comes back Song will be dying to have him back. In one aspect he is correct, Song is dying to have him back, but as the play continues maybe her reasoning for wanting to see him isn"t what the audience would think. Rene cheats on his wife with Song and also cheats on Song with a Danish girl named, Renee. Gallimard, at his own discretion discontinues his relationship with his wife, Helga, and Renee, to be with Song. This is one of our first clues that maybe Gallimard isn"t really the "Pinkerton" of this relationship, because he gives up his wife and his mistress. Besides that little piece of information, we realize if Gallimard represents the West, and Song represents the East, it seems to be that the West are much more powerful and have the passive and submissive East in there grasp.
