The cell membrane is designed specially to allow small molecules such as water through but the hole in the partially permeable membrane enough to allow big molecules such as sugar molecules through. If you place a plant in water, the water will enter the cell as it is trying to even the concentration of water out. The cell will swell up as it moves in, however unlike an animal cell the cell will not burst it will only become what we call ‘turgid’ this means it will only stretches but eventually the cell wall will not be able to stretch any further so it stops stretching. The plant cell does not allow itself to burst as it has a tough cellulose wall.
If you put a plant cell into a solution that is stronger than that in the vacuole the cell will start to shrink and eventually the cytoplasm pulls away from the cellulose wall. This process is called plasmolysis.
For example, if a potato cylinder was put into a sucrose solution and left over a period of time we would later expect to see that the potato has lost water. If the potato cylinder were put in water we would expect to see that the potato had gained water.
Osmosis can be affected by many factors, these factors may include temperature, light, oxygen etc., For example the rate of osmosis in a potato may be limited my temperature because it may be too hot therefore evaporation is occurring more, molecules tend to gain more energy when heated, this energy will be used to….
             Introduction.
Before we did the main experiment we did a preliminary experiment just to make sure that our method was suitable for the following experiment. The preliminary experiment was a way to improve our final experiment regarding not only accurateness but also safety. .
After performing our preliminary experiment I realised the following things needed to be changed:.
The amount of sucrose and distilled water I used. The potato cylinder needed to be immersed in water therefore I needed to find the right amount of liquid to do this.
