My pivotal values are God, faith and family. I am the youngest of three children. As such, I was always with my mother and my mother's favorite place to be was church. When I was a young child, I did not understand my mother's tireless dedication to this brick building. My friends would joke that we were the first ones in church when the doors swung open and the last to leave when they swung shut. My 7 year-old mind and body tired with the forced stillness. However, when I was around 9 or 10, I realized that it was not the building, but rather it was what was in my mother, not just when she was inside the building, but outside that building as well. My mother was a stalwart Christian and being around her, growing up in that building, I discovered what made my elderly mother jump with joy, it was her pivotal values, and now mine - God, faith and family.
My pivotal values, specifically, God called to me even when I did not want to hear Him or answer Him. Those values were instilled in my so early, that I cannot remember a time when they were not there. I had friends who would sneak candy, but the moment I would reach out my hand, I would feel something pull me back. Inevitably, they would get in trouble, but I didn't. I am never going to say that I was a model child, because I got in my fair share of trouble, but somehow I always was pulled right back out again. Even in the wild times of the early seventies, something always pulled me out of the frays and the turmoil that could have enveloped my very soul. What I always had, I eventually took for granted. And it was not until one day when I looked around and saw that my parents were gone and my siblings had their own trials. I had my own child to raise and I was not going to lose those things that used to wake me up as a child. I got down on my knees and I prayed in earnest. And there they were again, those things that wake me up and keep me going, God, faith and family.
