The Vietnam War

On September 2, 1945, Ho Chi Minh gave a speech, in which he said, "we, members of the Provisional Government, representing the whole Vietnamese people, declare that from now on we break off all relations of a colonial character with France" (Declaration). This quote represents Ho Chi Minh's strong volition to liberate from France's control. However, the U.S refused to assist Ho Chi Minh and the refusal made Ho Chi Minh turn to the communist side completely.
In addition to developments in Vietnam, China and Korea made the United States more concerned about communism. China had a civil war between the communists under Mao Zedong who led the struggle in the north and nationalists under China's president, Chiang Kai-shek in the south during the 1940's. During this civil war the United States sent the Nationalists approximately $3 billion in aid. (Americans 613). Even though Chiang Kai-shek received aid from the U.S, he was defeated by Mao Zedong in 1949 and China became the first communist country in Asia. From this period, the U.S was worried and feared the spread of communism throughout Asia. Korea was divided into two hostile camps, as China; democracy led by the U.S in South Korea and communism led by China and the Soviets in North Korea. On the morning of June 25, 1950, North Korea started to attack South Korea and initiated the Korean War. During more than three years of war, the U.S supported South Korea economically and militarily to push back the communists in Korea. Finally, the U.S and Soviet Union concluded an entente which stopped the fighting between each other. It was the U.S' first achievement to contain communism in Asia after China dominated. After the Korean War the U.S was deeply concerned about communism and intensified its program to prevent communist spreading. This program primary commenced in Vietnam, which region the U.S worried the spread of communism after China and Korea.
