FBI Agent


            
             What would it be like to live as an FBI agent? The Federal Bureau of Investigation is the chief investigating branch of the United States Department of Justice. The FBI is responsible for investigating 260 kinds of federal offenses. The agents collect information about individuals or groups that the agency believes to be a threat to our nations security. The investigators that compile the information are called FBI agents.
             The agency is headquartered in Washington, D.C. and has sixty (60) offices located through out the United States and Puerto Rico.
             FBI agents are responsible for investigating crimes such as assaults on the President, bank robberies and kidnappings. Additionally, they investigate other crimes such as stolen property, stolen vehicles and crimes against victims when state lines are crossed. The bureau fights organized crimes and pursues criminals who cross state lines while fleeing capture. They work closely with the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) to curb drug trafficking and curtail distribution of illegal drugs. The main function of an agent is to gather information.
             Many of the agents work long hours performing mundane tasks such as interviewing people, conducting computer research and spending hours on the telephone. At other times, agents place themselves in life threatening situations while trying to stop crime. Many times the work can be confrontational in places like seedy bars or high crime areas where police are targeted. An elite group of agents are assigned to protect the President against assassins. Agents put in late hours and endure many hardships.
             To become an agent, an applicant must be a graduate of an accredited law school or a college graduate with a degree in accounting, engineering or computer science. College graduate not possessing a specialized degree must have three (3) years of full-time work experience. . Agents must be citizens of the United States and be between the ages of 23 and 35.
