Hannah and Her Sisters

When he was married to Hannah, they had trouble conceiving a child and had gone to a doctor. The second scene is a flashback and shows them in the doctor's offices hearing the news that he had a low sperm count and the doctor advised he was infertile and nothing could be done to correct the problem. The doctor tells them that marriages often are stressed by this news and then proceeds to mention options such as adoption and artificial methods to conceive. The scene changes to Hannah and Mickey walking down a city street, with Hannah softly crying. He says he is humiliated by the news and Hannah asked what he did to cause the problem. Hannah suggests possible extensive masturbation as a cause. The scene then changes to a living room where dessert is being served. Mickey and Hannah are entertaining Mickey's partner, Norman and Norman's wife, Carol. Conversation is focused on the successes that Mickey and Norman have achieved but changes abruptly when Hannah and Mickey bring up the subject of getting a sperm donation from Norman. Mickey reassures Norman that he would not be the father; his only part is a deposit in a cup. It shows an awkward scene as Norman is entertaining the possibility while his wife, Carol, is clearly uncomfortable with the idea. Hannah then tries to move on and change the subject without getting an answer from Norman. However the scene closes with the four characters awkwardly sitting around the living room. The flashback ends and we are back in the dark apartment with Mickey and his thoughts for the final scene. Mickey discloses that Hannah did get artificially inseminated with his partner's sperm and ended up having twins. Both Mickey's marriage and his partnership with Norman broke up. Mickey seems to blame this on the artificial insemination although he is trying to convince himself they were already drifting apart when this occurred.
             The first scene starts with a black screen, the audience hear the words "I"m dying" just before the lamp on the nightstand is turned on, followed by "I"m dying" a second time as an eerie glow of orange light shows on the ceiling and upper walls.
