Flaws of the Drinking Laws

I could have picked Adolf Hitler because I liked his mustache. A decision this big is permissible for an 18-year-old boy to make; yet we do not trust that same 18-year-old boy to drink an alcoholic beverage with his family or peers. .
My older brother just turned 21. He has been on active duty in the United States Army for the past 4 years of his life. He spent over a year and a half overseas. For one full year, he lived in Korea right next to the demilitarized zone. He was trained in the use of guns, tank operations, and demolitions. Should the scenario have escalated, he would have been asked to lay down his life for his country. He was willing to do all of this for his country, yet the society he was willing to fight for was unwilling to allow him to drink a cold beer with his friends after a long day of work. Personally I find this illogical. Society is willing to let me die before they would let touch a drop of alcohol. Society expects me to be "responsible" enough to handle an assault rifle in the midst of battle, yet they do not believe I am capable of making rational judgments about when I believe I have had enough to drink.
The minimum age for drinking is one of the most highly regulated laws in this country. The law states that any persons under 21 years of age will not be allowed to purchase or imbibe alcohol. Penalties of up to $10,000 can be dealt to those who break these laws (Alcohol). These laws have been in effect in all 50 states since 1988 (Kaestner). The harsh penalties and unusually quick approval of these laws was a result of the staggeringly large number of alcohol related driving deaths for 17-20 year olds. I most definitely agree that drinking and driving was something that needed to be addressed immediately, but I also believe that the laws need to be modified to several other factors, which make little sense. The set minimum age seems to have been largely influenced by the 58% relationship between alcohol and fatal accidents involving teenagers (Kaetner).
