French Econmoy After the 2nd World War

Airplanes? There weren't any."(Lecerf ,1963 pp11-12).
There was more then just internal problems for France. The Pre 1939 French colonial empire was on the verge of crumbling. Syria and Lebanon had already achieved independence, France's west African possessions were demanding a method of self government and some nationalists demanded outright independence. In Indochina which consisted of Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos the communists and other nationalists launched a war of independence against France. C. Fohlen claims these colonial problems drained Frances economy severely in the post war years and had considerable repercussions on internal French politics.
During the war the French economy operated under a state capitalist system. During this time there was a Resistance movement. Charles de Gaulle a army general called for a widespread participation in the Resistance movement and this led to de Gaulle becoming one of the main leaders of the movement. As years passed the movement gained more and more support. The Resistance movement united all political elements within France, Conservative, Communist and Socialist. This collaboration continued after the end of the war and historians suggest there was a mutual agreement that it was necessary to promote a renewal of France and avoid the economic stagnation that existed before the war.
However Schulze underlines the fact that the early post war period was marked by clear political and economic instability. Reconstruction from the effects of war and pre war depression were part of an environment where inflation rates were high , permanent budgetary problems existed and the foreign exchange was in crisis. Politically the unity between the resistance movement had weakened due to conflicting ideas over policies.
Historians suggest there were some positive post war features .For example foreign aid, 2.6 billion dollars of Marshall aid between 1947 and 1952.
