Gustave Klimt: The Birch Forest

Other philosophers believed that art was the opposite of science. Science was defined as the use of intelligence to create a system of symbols describing reality but really falsifying it; whereas art is based on intuition, a direct realisation of reality which is not brought about by thought. Bendetto Croce believed works of art to be the expression of these intuitions in material form; beauty and ugliness are not part of this. These are qualities of the spirit expressed intuitively in such works of art.
Marx believed an artwork reflects the interests of a dominant society and that it cannot be classified as great unless it is progressive, i.e. it supports the cause of the society in which it was created. .
I disagree because I do not see what a forest of birch could do with the society. I believe that the forest has a certain amount of ingrained beauty and ugliness and that only those who choose to interpret (in this case paint) and bring forth this true beauty by making this the major aspect of the artwork can be creating thus a piece of art. .
For Freud art mainly had a therapeutic use. This meant that both the artist and the public can reveal hidden tensions by these means. That in this way of creating art, they are bringing themselves into a state of release. They are not only painting what is there, but also painting into this what they have pent up, be it aggressions, be it depression. This is best observed in the surrealist movement in works such as the Irish writer James Joyce's novels or Dahli's paintings. They used the unconsciousness as a source for material from which to create their works. Klimt's work could also be interpreted this way. The birch forest has a certain menace to it which is really quite inexplicable as it is a beautiful scene from nature. The sunlight streaming through the forest of pale tree trunks contrasting with the multicoloured leaves on the forest floor.
