Literary Analysis On "A Rose For Emily"

The males" complaints are polite. "We really must do something about it, Judge. I"d be the last one in the world to bother Miss Emily, but we've got to do something" (89). This man realizes that there is a problem and that a solution has to be found, but he is really bothered by having to do anything. As they further discuss this situation, the Judge displays his politeness when he asks, "will you accuse a lady to her face of smelling bad?" (89). This is not something that he can condone. As a solution to their problem, the men finally go to her house under the cover of darkness to spread the lime. By doing this, they think they are sparing Miss Emily. .
Faulkner also characterized the men when the townspeople are speculating about the relationship between Miss Emily and Homer. Faulkner writes that "the men did not want to interfere" (92). They obviously don't want to confront or embarrass Miss Emily in anyway. In his treatment of males in this story, Faulkner is nothing but complimentary. .
On the other hand, Faulkner's characterization of the females is the complete opposite. Whereas the males attend the funeral out of respect, "the women mostly out of curiosity to see the inside of her house" (87). The women are portrayed as being motivated by their curiosity rather than concern for Miss Emily. When the smell around Miss Emily's home develops, it was a woman who first complains about it. The concept of women being nosey and interfering carries on throughout the story. Their unkindness is shown in their actions also. Whereas the men don't want to really bother her about the smell, a woman wants to "send her word to stop it. "Isn't there a law?""(89) she said. The women in this story seem to be quite unkind. When there is curiosity about the relationship that develops between Miss Emily and Homer, "some of the ladies began to say that it was a disgrace to the town and a bad example to the young people" (92).
