Racism In Othello


Therefore, in theatres blacks were usually portrayed as stereotyped wicked guys. But it is different in "Othello". Othello as a character portrayed in a different way. He is in higher position which is not common in those times. He is a commander of white Venedians, also he is husband of white noble women.
             If we look at the play "Othello," we can see that how Shakespeare emphases his thoughts and beliefs about racism throughout the play. However, Othello described as a noble person he is a tragic hero of the play. He is a moor who commands the armies of Venice. He is dark skinned and foreigner Although he is a strong general, he is not accepted in Venetian society. Because he comes from different culture and different educational background. Naturally, he has a different beliefs and customs and he is not very familiar with Venice customs. Brabantio who is the father of Desdemona shows open prejudices towards him. He objects to his daughter's marriage with a moor. Brabantio can not believe that Desdemona married Othello of her own will. .
             On the other hand, if we take a glance at other characters in the play, we can see that most of characters have racist comments, as well. The main characters that have racist attitudes are Iago, Brabantio, Roderigo and Emilia in the play. .
             For instance; when Emilia found that Othello had killed Desdemona she got crazy and called him as "Blacker Devil" (W. Shakespeare, p:129). Emilia, is disgusted from Othello when she finds that Othello had killed her lady, Desdemona. I think that she was racist towards Othello throughout the play and did not approve of his relationship with Desdemona. She is a conservative women but she loves her lady a lot. That's why she respects her because of her moor husband. That is to say, Emilia, is deeply attached to her mistress. .
             Another important character in Othello, is Iago. He is the most racist character in the play. Stanley Wells states that " In Othello the play centered by Iago because he is the most wicked character in the play.
