Radiologic Mechanical Malfunctions Due To Inadequate Maintenance

            There are many reports of mechanical failures in raidologic equipment that were caused by inadequate inspections. Because of these mechanical failures there have been injury's and even deaths. These malfunctions could have been avoided if inspections would have been done properly.
             There have also been information on malfunctions discovered in the Nordic countries like Finland, Norway, and Sweden. Theses incidents were reviewed by STUK. Most malfunctions are found during testing of the equipment most of the malfunctions found would have caused serous injury but thanks to proper inspection and preventive maintenance failures during clinical use were significantly reduced. Malfunctions caused by improper design or manufacturing errors are usually found during acceptance testing. .
             Most periodic inspections most often identify malfunctions related to patient radiation safety and image quality. Incorrect maintenance and user errors are responsible for about half of the patient injuries that result during use of raidologic devices and device design account for the other half.
             Hospitals should make it a must to check that manufacturers and third parties perform sufficiently thorough mechanical inspections because through these inspections injury's and deaths are prevented .
