Sir Gawain And Green Knight

The importance of religion to Arthur's court was held very highly. Also the time of year is important to note, Christmas, the birth and celebration of Jesus.
The Green Knight seems to have a strong symbolic connection with nature in this story. First of all, He enters the court carrying a "holly bob that is goodliest in green when groves are bare"(206). I see this "nature" aspect of the Green Knight to symbolically mirror the very own challenge that he brings. As nature is cyclic and continual, so too is the Green Knights" "game" that he has brought forth to Arthur's court. Nature isn't going to suddenly stop, and either is this very violent game. Secondly, the horseman's color is "as green as the grasses"(235), showing that he is apparently full of life, strength, and virility.
Along with all of the above symbolism, the Green Knights" descriptions also include a foreshadowing element. "It seemed that no man might his deadly dints withstand"(201-2). This sentence is a direct reference to the game that Gawain is about to embark upon. This foreshadowing is further supported by the way in which Gawain chooses to accept the terms of the Horseman's game. Gawain takes a modest approach to accepting the offer: "I am the weakest, well I know, and of wit feeblest; and the loss of my life would be least of any"(354-5). This language suggests that he had a feeling that he was going to die from this challenge. This reinforces the apparent strength and danger of this mysterious horseman, while showing that Gawain is not a pretentious or ostentatious character. .
Gawain's shield, complete with the design of a pentangle on the front and a picture of the Virgin Mary on the inside is perhaps one of the most powerfully symbolic items in this tale. The inclusion of the Virgin Mary highlights again the value of Christianity and faith to Arthur's Knights. However, the pentangle image can be viewed as a chivalric symbol.
