Emma & Clueless

On the other hand, the language similarly exhibits this idea through the opening paragraph in the novel, "EMMA WOODHOUSE, handsome, clever, and rich, with a comfortable home and happy disposition, seemed to unite some of the best blessings of existence; and had lived nearly twenty-one years in the world with very little to distress or vex her" (Emma 5)
From here, we may clearly see that the linguistic and image elements within this text are" redundant", because the image is telling the same story as the language. At a deeper level, although this text is redundant we can see that the verbal text is an "Elaboration" of Emma's photograph. This elaboration branches to a more specific term of "Anchorage" which proposes that the text elaborates the image. Indeed this is true, as the introductory paragraph further informs us that Emma Woodhouse is "smart" and "lived twenty-one years in the world with little to distress or vex her". This further detail may not have been presupposed by merely viewing the photograph. Therefore, because the photograph is redundant and not a vital aspect for informational value, the mode of representation may be said to be "Salience" as the visual works to capture our attention through the striking colours which add to realism. Hence, one can see the way in which the visual image of Emma provides the repetition of key ideas with that of the narrative's written text in order to create meaning. .
The text Emma has used the medium of a novel and as a result has certain predetermined parameters. Austen is limited to the tool of language throughout the rest of her novel. She uses her skill to create a detailed, accurate and often satirical imagery of the world of Highbury. Without the constraints of a timeframe, Austen is able to present this picture in detail. One of the great strengths of a novel is the fact that the author is able to carefully build up characters, personalities and situations, which Austen does with great success.
