Zometa is a new drug that is used for the treatment of bone metastases caused by cancer. Bone metastases is caused by a wide range of cancers and mostly incurable cancers. The US Food and Drug Administration have approved the drug Zometa.
Zometa is made by Novartis Pharmaceuticals and it is the first drug to be approved for both multiple myeloma and all other solid tumors. Zometa is in a classification of drugs called biphosphates. They work by slowing down the actions of bone cells.
A study that involved more than 3,000 patients showed that approximately 14% decrease in the number of patients with bone problems, compared to those who didn't take Zometa.
The side effect of Zometa was kidney damage. Zometa is contraindicated in patients with clinically significant hypersensitivity to zoledonic acid or other biphosphates. Adverse reactions to Zometa are usually mild. Most commonly associated with fever. Occasionally, patients experience flu-like symptoms. Gastrointestinal reactions such as nausea and vomiting have been reported following intravenous infusion of Zometa. .
