This condition can appear with or without hyperactivity (Alexander-Roberts 1). ADHD isn't a convenient or assume term for parents to refer children that misbehave. It is treatable through prescription medication and therapy and if left untreated inhibits one from functioning properly in society.

Before exploring the ways in which ADHD matches the criteria established for what a disorder is, it is important to first understand the disorder and have some background information on it. The symptoms of ADHD exist on a range. Everybody has had some of these symptoms some time of their life. However, individuals with ADHD have more of these symptoms more of the time and to a point that it interferes with their ability to function normally in academics, work and social settings, and to be able to reach their full potential. Children with ADHD are often noted for their inconsistencies at home and in school. .
             Diagnostic Criteria for ADHD is as follows for intention symptoms. To be considered with ADHD they should have 6 or more of the following symptoms persisting for at least 6 months, to a degree that is maladaptive and inconsistent with developmental level. They often fail to give close attention to detail and makes careless mistakes. Difficulty sustaining attention to tasks or play and often doesn't seem to listen when spoken to directly. Often doesn't follow through and fails to finish tasks and has difficulty organizing tasks and activities. Avoids or dislikes tasks requiring sustained mental effort and often loses things necessary for tasks or activities. Is often easily distracted by extraneous stimuli and often forgetful in daily activities. (Encarta 98 Encyclopedia).
