Aspirin

Aspirin, which is made by Bayer, is a pain reliever that temporarily relieves headaches, painful discomfort and fever of colds, and inflammation caused by various conditions. The active ingredient is acetylsalicylic acid, otherwise known as ASA or aspirin. Pills come in suppositories of 325 mg (regular strength), 500 mg (extra strength) or 650 mg (fast acting). Aspirin costs $7.99 for 100 tablets.
To relieve pain and fever in adults, 325 mg - 650 mg should be taken every 4-6 hours as needed. Aspirin should not be used for children or teenagers with chickenpox or the flu, because of the risk of developing Reye's syndrome, a potentially fatal disease. However, Aspirin may be used under doctor supervision for children. In this case, the recommended dose is 10-15 mg/kg of body weight every 4-6 hours, to a maximum of 2400 mg in 24 hours. .
Aspirin should not be used by anyone who is allergic to ASA or any of the ingredients of the product. People who have ever had a severe allergic reaction to a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug such as ibuprofen should not use Aspirin either. Again, children or teens with chickenpox, or people with active peptic ulcers, should not use Aspirin. Pregnant women should take aspirin only under doctor surveillance. Breast-feeding women should not take excessive doses of ASA. Diabetics and people with gout should avoid Aspirin. Use of Aspirin should be stopped one week prior to elective surgery. .
ASA has several side effects, ranging from the rare to relatively common, from serious to not serious. More common side effects (those that occur in more than 10% of cases) include mild to moderate abdominal or stomach cramps, pain, or discomfort, heartburn or indigestion, and nausea or vomiting. Less common side effects (occurring in less than 10% of cases) include trouble sleeping, nervousness, or jitters (if product contains caffeine) severe abdominal or stomach pain, cramping, or burning, bloody or black, tarry stools, severe or continuing headache, continuing buzzing or ringing in ears, skin rash, hives, or itching, unusual tiredness or weakness, and vomiting of blood or material that looks like coffee grounds.
