After many attacks on the United States various chemical and biological weapons have been studied in preparation for any future terrorism. It is imperative that the medical community and the public be informed of the unpreparedness that our country is facing concerning bioterrorism. It is clear to see with these survey results what areas should be focused upon when preparing awareness plans. In order to accomplish this goal, statistical information must be used to prove that we are not prepared for another disaster. Some examples of this would be the bombings of the world trade center, the contamination of Salmonella in Oregon, and the contamination of sarin nerve gas that occurred in Tokyo. In an effort to create local preparedness, organizations such as Centers for Disease Control, Prevention National Pharmaceuticals Stockpile Program, and the federal government are using a significant amount of money to provide an adequate awareness plan, in an effort to reduce illness and death from future terrorist attacks.
Using a survey from Emergency rooms located in some Northwest States Bioterrorism preparedness was evaluated in the areas of administrative plans, training, physical resources, and representative medication inventories. By defining minimum requirement of physical resources including a hazardous materials or chemical weapons plan, ED indoor area with isolated ventilation and a shower with water containment or outdoor portable decontamination unit, at least one self-contained breathing apparatus or supplied air-line respirator also one chemical-protective garment. .
The goal is to provide specific feedback to hospitals, so that they know were they are deficient and need to plan or supplement their hospitals in order to meet minimum requirements to prepare for a biological or chemical attack. This survey should also be used for other hospital in the United States to examine their needs to be prepared for incidents of bioterrorism.
