Breaking Barriers

One of the most powerful forces of communication in the world today, if not the most powerful, is music. Music has the ability to transcend barriers like nothing else. Music has a way to carry a message, spark a memory, tell a story and even evoke ones emotions. Music is a common ground for men and women, blacks and whites, Americans and Non-Americans. Unquestionably, music is universal and plays a part in all our lives, as well as in businesses and society.
Whether you study music like myself, or just enjoy listening to it, you can usually relate to or understand the overall message of the song. A lot of people tend to listen to music that reflects how they feel, whether it's about a certain subject or just their demeanor at that particular time. Music can be a very positive thing for all of us. For me in particular, the Dave Matthews Band has opened my eyes to a lot of positive things. One lyric that I genuinely believe in is "The future is no place to place your better days" from the song "Cry Freedom". It's not that he says anything that any one of us doesn't already know its how the music is structured and written around the lyric that really drives the message home.
Music isn't just used for inspiration and words of wisdom. Music can be a means of celebration. It is used, and has been used in virtually every culture since the dawn of time. No matter what the occasion, whether it's a Sunday mass, birthday party, a wedding, a festival, a graduation, as well as a funeral. The previously stated all illustrate the importance of music in our society and culture. Just try celebrating a birthday with out singing "Happy Birthday", or going to a wedding without the song "Here Comes the Bride" it just wouldn't be the same. Music can literally make or break a special occasion. Just imagine no music at a wedding! People would be sitting around not really doing anything but drinking! Everybody would most likely want to leave, and it wouldn't be a very enjoyable experience.
