The Effect Age has on the Ability to recognize Emotions.

The Effect Age has on the Ability to recognize Emotions.

This experiment was devised to investigate the affect age has on a persons ability to recognize emotions. The experiment consisted of children aged eight to 11 and psychology 100 students who were shown 11 pictures of faces and then given two words from which they had to pick the one which best described the emotion. This tested the ability to detect emotion. The results showed little difference in how many correct answers the eight year olds recorded opposed to the adults, which supported the hypothesis that age would not have any effect on ability to recognize emotion as emotional recognitions develops very early in life.
             .
This experiment looked into how age affects the ability to interpret emotion. It's purpose was to investigate if there was a difference in adults and childrens" ability to interpret emotions and further support the results found by the Baron-Cohen Experiment which showed that children develop the ability to recognize emotion earlier in life than previously thought. "We expected to find some development between the ages of 8 and 11 in the ability to recognize the same set of mental states as had been tested in adults Contrary to this prediction, we found that all four age groups performed significantly above chance on this task, and that no age differences were found. This suggests that by the age of 8, children are already very competent at reading the mind in the face, and this ability extends beyond recognition of the narrow set of basic emotions previously demonstrated." (Baron-Cohen et al 1995).
The Baron-Cohen paper introduced the idea that children develop the ability to recognize emotions at an early age so this experiment looked at the accuracy of a child compared to that of an adult in recognizing emotions. The children in this experiment are aged eight to 11 which makes them all in the Concrete Operational Period of development.
