             Can you handle being molested or forced to work and to do what someone pleases by someone? Being molested or being forced to work by someone does not mean to give up to this enemy, but to surpass the enemy and make your dreams become true. In The Color of Water written by James McBride, main characters Ruth and James went through harsh points, but were able throw away their past and start over to make dreams come true. .
             Ruth McBride was known as Rachel Deborah Shilsky until she got rid of it because of her past. She had a racist father named Fishel Shilsky, a lovely mother named Hudis Shilsky, and a sister named Dee-Dee. She loved her mom and sister dearly, but her father was someone she had to run away from. This quote, " Such as getting in bed with me at night and doing things to me sexually that I could not tell anyone about," explained how messed up Ruth's life was. Her father treated her bad as if she was a just a slave to him. The father not only treated Ruth wrong, but the mother too. He cheated on Ruth's mom with some big lady and tried to encourage a divorce. One of the biggest mistakes in her life was having a father like Fishel Shilsky, but she could not do anything about it. Another mistake would be leaving her sister Dee-Dee because of the treatment of her father. She could never help these mistakes. .
             James McBride, the son of Ruth McBride, was treated badly by his siblings he managed to catch the spot on the concrete cold floor. He grew up in New York and started his mistake in his teenage life with his friends. He crashed into a death zone after his stepfather died. In his immature state he managed to pile up on drugs and drinks. He became addicted to these drugs like weed causing him to steal cars and purses from citizens in New York. " My friends and I shoplifted. We broke into cars," is quotes from The Color of Water explaining how James" mistake in life was in his teenage years.
