             6. The supplier's translation software interprets the file from the EDI format and places the order information in interface file(s). The EDI interface files contain the translated purchase order information in a format predefined by the supplier. .
             7. The interface programs perform edits and checks before the data is integrated with the supplier's application software and populates the production database. The application software on the supplier's computer can now process the buyer's order.
After all 7 steps are complete, the receiver of the document can then send a receipt in the same way that the document arrived but, of course, the process is reversed.
Who uses EDI? Well, the true question should be, "Who does not use EDI?- From grocery stores to the U.S. government, EDI is more widely used than one might think. More and more businesses are turning to EDI as a way of transmitting documents because of the benefits that it has to offer. .
What are these benefits? First, the most obvious benefit is the ability to send documents virtually anywhere with out the increasing costs of paper and postage. If one does not have to worry about paper then there is less filing and less paper clutter to worry about. Another benefit is speed. EDI can transmit documents in a matter of minutes. Just think, no more snail mail or busy fax machines to deal with. This makes doing business much faster than the old traditional paper trail ways of doing things. Accuracy and dependability are also major benefits of using EDI. Since EDI sends and exact copy of the digital document there is no risk of typographical errors on the receiving end and both parties know that they are dealing with exact copies of the information.
The next question that needs to be answered is, "OK, What's the catch?- The catch is that implementation of the system can be rather difficult. Since you are dealing with a totally new way of doing business, changes are going to have to take place.
