Ego States

The main characters of Lord of the Flies, Ralph, Jack, Simon, Piggy and Roger, portrayed all the different ego states. Some of these characters portrayed more than one ego state throughout the book but most only acted out through one of the states. The three different ego states are the Id, Ego and Superego.
The first ego state I will discuss is the Superego. The Superego is the part of the mind that is the parent voice. A person acting out of this state will know what is right and wrong and knows exactly where the line is drawn. This person will never cross the line because of fear of guilt and punishment if they are bad and they will be good because they get pleasure from it. For most of this book Piggy was a perfect example of the Superego. He was the parent of the island opposed to the others who acted "Like kids. Acting like a crowd of kids." (Pg 38) This was Piggy talking about how the other boys were acting on the island. Piggy was the only kid who acted as a grown up would have in the situation.
The next ego state is the Id. The Id is at the complete other end from the Superego. The Id is the instincts part of the mind and only wants gratification at that very moment and won't think about what will happen in the future. In the book the Id acts out in natural survival skills for the boys. The boys act out in the Id when they hunt, fight, curse and kill. The best examples of Id in the book are Jack and Roger but Ralph and Piggy also have their moments of Id in the book. "You should have seen the blood," (Pg 70) said Jack speaking about his first killing of a pig. While Jack and his hunters were hunting and acting out of their Id a ship passed by and had no chance of rescuing them because the signal fire was out. Due to Jack being more worried about the natural instinct of eating and not thinking about the fire he had no chance of being rescued. In the book Piggy acted out of the Id when Jack had stolen his glasses.
