Bless Me, Ultima: Conflicting Lifestyles

The novel Bless Me, Ultima, is a classic tale based upon Mexican- American culture and folklore. The author, Rudolfo Anaya uses Mexican names and Spanish words to give the reader a true sense of the Latin culture. The story is based around young Antonio who was coming of age at the conclusion of World War II. His family lived in a quiet and isolated New Mexico valley that was in a state of transition. Tony, the last child was protected and raised mostly by his mother with the help of Ultima, a sickly friend who came to live with the family. She became a teacher and mentor to Tony, showing him her brand of spirituality. Tony's parents came from very different backgrounds, and raised him based upon their cultures. Though the Marez background influences Tony, the Luna background made a much more profound impression on him, leading Tony into Ultima's world of spiritual exploration and healing. .
Gabriel Marez, Tony's father was raised in a very nontraditional lifestyle. His family lineage came from the plains. His family was restless and nomadic, and inclined to be rootless and adventurous. They lived off the land. The family led a simple life, and believed that by worshipping the land it would provide for them. To be happy and prosperous one did not need the comfort of towns or advantages of education, one only needed the vast open plains of the llano. Gabriel's wife encouraged him to give up the wild lifestyle and move into town where they could build a family together. He did this but it crushed his adventurous spirit. He was forced to give up his land, herd of animals, and close group of vaquero friends who in turn condemned him for leaving. His life in town was much different and became evident that he was not truly happy. He showed these feelings by drinking often and frequently separating himself from the family. Reluctantly, he attended church and when receiving communion, he simply went through the motions, without care.
