Upon getting the letter, she was surprised to know that the letter came from a then unknown person and thought that perhaps something happened to her sister. Carrying her baby in hand, she walked through the muddy streets to a field an then there; placed her baby on cornhusks then went to a nearby tree to read the letter. She then found out that it was from her past lover. Thoughts of her happy relationship flooded her mind and she was afloat on reminiscing those lovely times when out of the corner of her eye, she saw a snake near the cornhusks where she placed her baby. Quickly snapping back to reality, Tinang dropped the letter and checked on her baby.
For me, the highlighted element in this story is the main character, Tinang. Through her experiences, I saw how one should differentiate fantasy against reality. I would dwell into Tinang's personality and how she played her part in the story. I would also comment on how her person made me understand the story more and how her experiences enlightened me.
Now for me, this story is about Tinang's vain attempt to hold on to those happy times with her former lover in order to escape from the misery and hardship she is dealing with at the moment only to be roughly waken up by the peril her baby almost befell onto. For you see, Tinang was first a maid working on a farm and on that farm, she fell in love with one of the workers named Amando. Now for some unknown reason, Amando left, thus leaving Tinang alone and hanging with a promise of eternal love for one another. Time passed and Tinang was impregnated by another man who was a drunkard.
.
In the story, Tinang was described as beautiful and she had lots of suitors. She was eyed by most men, whether they be workers or land owners, they like Tinang and tell her flattering words, and some even proposed to her. Tinang also got to study until the sixth grade thus she could converse quite well.
