English Majors Job Opportunities

So as I looked into this whole English idea as a major, I began by thinking I would walk into the teaching world without a problem. To my surprise, it takes more than simply a degree and a smile to get into a position like that. These days teaching positions are becoming more difficult to get, yet having an English degree has proven to be pretty valuable in the world. So I guess instead of talking about being an English teacher, which still has a possibility of being my job, I am going to talk more about the options I have as an English major and what I might do with some of those options. .
Yes, I would say that being an English professor would be something I might do in my later life. Maybe it could be something I would base retirement on. It seems as if that would be a smart move. That would give me time to get my PhD and secure a job at a university that would keep me employed until I am ready to head away from the working world, and go south to the golf courses. But it's not the pleasure of being in the south golfing the rest of my life away that I"m worried about. It's that pre-security stage of life that concerns me. Like what am I going to do before I get that great job I can retire on, what am I going to do right out of college? Here in lies the problem that every college student faces as they near the end of their duration in an institution of higher education. So I researched what value the English degree had in the world today. According to Shelly K. Schwartz of CNNMoney, an English degree is as valuable in the business world as it is the educational world. In fact, when you graduate with an English degree you become quite coveted in the corporate world because you have the communications skills that are needed in that business atmosphere (Schwartz). See the problem that faces most English majors is that they have such a large number of jobs to choose from when they graduate that they are stumped as of where to go.
