Although child prostitutes are not always runaways, there is a close link between the two issues. Runaway children often see exploiting themselves as the only option to make money while living on the streets. Since child prostitution is so closely related to the issue of runaway children, we need to explore the preventative measures for both. .
The key to prevent children from becoming runaways or child prostitutes lies in education. Parents need to be aware of and knowledgeable about how to communicate with their children. An open line of communication between parents and children is one of the most important ways to keep children from running away. Anyone who has been a parent recognizes that this task is not as easy as it may seem; therefore, we encourage parents to utilize parenting classes and counseling services offered by state and local governments. .
Unfortunately, a large majority of children who run away are escaping homes where they are exploited, neglected, or abused by their parents. It is in these homes that the parents are unable to prevent children from running away, since they are inevitably the reason for the child's desire to leave. In order to protect these children from the dangers of the streets and child prostitution, we need to first increase the awareness and educate professionals working on a day-to-day basis with children. Programs like the Paul and Lisa Program educate professionals such as guidance counselors and coaches on the causes and effects of juvenile prostitution. These programs also educate professionals on preventative measures they can perform to prevent child prostitution. It is vital that we educate these professionals because they have the continual presence and power to provide children with the awareness, assistance, and direction that may be lacking in their home environment.
