A solid program of managing risk also shows the University's intent to act responsibly so as to decrease the risk of being subject to litigation. As facility managers, it is important to realize that we have a duty of care in the eyes of the law. If this duty is breached and in turn harm or injury is caused, the University is deemed negligent. A finding of negligence could have severe monetary penalties, therefore, it is in the best interest of the University to prevent such occurrences as best as possible.
There are generally three main types of negligence that a facility manager must be aware of. Maintenance of facilities and equipment is a key part of managing risk. Another area in which managers should be concerned is supervision. Most negligence in facility management occurs here. The last type of negligence occurs with policies and procedures. It is important that all patrons and staff are aware of the rules and regulations as well as safety procedures in order to prevent injuries and/or harm. .
There are several ways in which the IBC and Student Recreation Pavilion can go about implementing strategies from the risk management plan. Making sure that the staff is aware of the risk management plan will go a long way in insuring that there are minimum injuries and/or losses. By providing proper signage and announcements, patrons will be informed of any dangers or inherent risks in the activities in which they wish to take part. The most important idea in risk management is making sure that the staff is well trained and aware of there responsibility in maintaining a safe facility.
