The Fire Department of New York consists of 11,495 uniformed firefighters and fire officers. Considering that NYC has a population of 8,008,278 and is 321.8 square miles (see figure 1.0) the amount of fighters and officers is just enough to cover New York's City's terrain. There are 2,677 EMTs and paramedics that are considered part of the fire department and have similar duties. The department has 222 Fire marshals and 195 Fire inspectors. There is 1,741 administrative support personnel consisting of dispatchers, mechanics/Trades people, technologists, civilian professionals, etc. that make it possible for the Fire Department to provide its services.
