Freedom Of Sppech And Expression

This upset the colonists especially after being ignored by Britain for do long. When the founding fathers wrote the first amendment this injustice was significant in the development and cause for this idea. They wanted the new country to benefit from the struggles that they had endured under English rule. Yet they also wanted something new that only Americans would have. Unfortunately the founding fathers had no idea of how exaggerates and taken advantage of this amendment would become.
In regards to school- related literature the first amendment has been unimaginably stretched. Especially in the debate about whether or not students should read Mark Twains novel of "Huckleberry Finn" where the first amendment has been unclear about who is right. In 1982 school administrator, John Wallace, attempted to remove the book from his school's curriculum. He was upset over the use of the infamous word "nigger" and he said that he "[didn't] want any kid to be forced to read this racist trash the book is poison it is anti-American It works against the idea that all men are created equal- (Hentoff, 18). Yet on the other side of it Dr. Kenneth Clark disagrees. He said that he loved the book as a boy because "'the relationship between Huck and Jim was such an easy, understanding relationship, the kind a boy wishes he could have.'"(Hentoff, 19) Possibly John Wallace just as whites in Pre-Civil Was Missouri, whom Twain wrote about could not see past that word. This is a perfect example of how the first amendment has been warped to fit different perspectives. In a way both men are correct in their conclusion but John Wallace failed to realize the importance in this book of the word to accurately portray the disgusting behavior of mankind throughout this era. Throughout most of the novel Mark Twain was attempting to "make clear what a damnable word 'nigger' is because it shows the whites who used it didn't see didn't begin to understand the people they were talking about.
