Freedom Of The City

            Freedom of the city is a play about civil rights. I disagree with the above statement. I believe the oppressors are the only ones who are guilty of distorting the truth. To be oppressed means to be demoralized victimized and harassed and bullied. The key word here is victim. How can one be guilty of distorting the truth if they are a victim? Oppressor means to be the one who is an absolute ruler, especially one who is harsh and oppressive. .
             Therefore I do not agree with the above statement as I think only the oppressor in this play are responsible of distorting the truth.
             In Freedom of the city we are given many examples of the oppressors distorting the truth. Liam O"Kelly is a clear oppressor when it is know to us as an audience that there is only three people occupying the Guildhall Liam O"Kelly distorts which means To give an inaccurate view of by representing falsely or misleadingly. He .
             Makes the statement that "There are no reports of serious casualties but unconfirmed reports are coming in that a group of about fifty gunmen have taken possession of the guildhall here below me and have barricaded themselves in". Pg 177 allied with the oppressors, as he is a reporter his opinion and false accusations are strongly tainted with his allegiance.
             From the start of this play we are never invited to empathize with the powerful. The oppressors are the powerfulness; from the moment the play opens we are given a powerful image of death. From this moment on we begin to empathize with these characters who are the oppressed. So from all this, the oppressors need to distort the evidence and the truth to become innocent. There is no evidence throughout the play that back up the fact that what Liam O"Kelly reports is true.
             The Priest is not a main oppressor in this play though he doesn't really give the oppressed a chance he mainly generalizes the situation. He does not know each individual and he says that they don't know any better.
