Great Expectations Pip And Money


            Money can change anybody and Pip was no exception. When Pip is poor he truly wants to be a gentlemen, he has great expectations for himself. Pip feels embarrassed that his family has no money. Pips pride corrupts him and blinds him from how he is treating Joe. He finds the price paid for letting money rule your life can be a harmful thing. He loses friends, family, and parts of himself all to be a "true gentleman". .
             When Pip first meets Estella he is quite embarrassed of his family and himself due to their economic standing in society. Pip does not want to be an apprentice to Joe and by rejecting the position it puts Joe down. He wanted to impress Estella but Joe and his sister have no money therefore he is left with nothing to impress her with except what little manners he has. Estella calling him a common boy gives him more motivation to become gentlemen. Once he has money, Pip is generally satisfied. It was due to his pride that Pip went to London. He left his family and was ashamed of them and of his roots. .
             When Joe meets Pip in London, Pip treats him terribly. After Pip moves to London and is having a nice time with all the other gentlemen he feels accepted and that he is a "true gentlemen". He prides himself on this. In the meantime Pip is developing an ego that he will not be aware of and it keeps him from realizing what is important in life. The person this affects the most is Joe. He never got the respect he deserved from Pip. It only develops more throughout time. Instead of getting smarter or investing, he just lived off of the money so graciously given to him by Magwitch, who worked hard for it. He is not happy when he hears where his money came from, yet his pride keeps him from giving the utmost respect to Magwitch.
             Pip is corrupted by wealth. He forgets his family and the people that are important to him. All he worries about is trying to look nice and sophisticated around his new friends.
