Biology Lab

A single Daphnia is placed on a microscope slide with a depression well and covered with one or two drops of water. The Daphnia is then covered with a cover slip and placed under the microscope. Look through the microscope and count the number of heartbeats in one minute using a stopwatch. Record this data on a chart. Then, using the same daphnia, extract the water from the well where the Daphnia is and replace it with one to two drops of 5 % alcohol. Place the daphnia under the microscope and count the number of heartbeats in one minute using the same procedure. Record this data in the same chart. Dispose of the Daphnia. Next, get a new Daphnia and do the same procedure with the Daphnia in water. This time, replace the water with 10 % alcohol and count the number of heartbeats in one minute. Record all this on the chart. Repeat the same steps using 15 % alcohol on this new Daphnia and record the data on the chart.
The next three steps are the same as above, except, use a 3 %, 5 %, and 7 % caffeine solution with the Daphnia. Use a new Daphnia for each potency of the chemical. Lastly, record all the data on the chart.
