Cultural difference is a great barrier in society and is hard to overcome once someone has been set apart by it; as the only way for the person to feel like they belong is to either deny who they are or accept who they are and get others to accept them too. Hussein in Only Ten was mistreated by all the children, and immediately chose to accept himself and attempt to get them to accept him also. He did this by slowly accustoming them to his ways and getting to know them, at the same time allowing them to get to know him; but only after a period of being very withdrawn, because he didn't know how to cope with the change. Hussein put up with much ridicule until those around him understood his background and culture, with this, he felt that he could finally be free and allow those around him to see him for who he was. Olive did much the same, as for a long time she tried to be someone that she wasn't, trying to fit by diverting attention from that which essentially set her apart. To cover for her difference in culture, Olive was loud and light-hearted, often using the excuse of "I"m not stupid, I"m Greek" to put problems aside, but once she had accepted who she was, she didn't feel that she needed to put on an act for anyone.
Culture is not the only thing that may set us apart from others; things such as physical appearance play a great part in our lives. We all try to fit in with those around us, keeping up with the latest fashion trends and exercising until we can't move a muscle as to not get another cellulite bump on our thighs, yet we still feel that there is something wrong with our physical appearances. People are set aside by the way that they look, if they choose to look eccentric, or merely due to their physical structure.
