John Stuart Mill Revised Harm Principle


It would be in the case of an individual whose drug use has becomes a dependency where Mill would argue that this individuals actions are threatening the vital interests of others. A person who could not function normally without drugs would then be characterized as a non-productive citizen within aspects of family life and within the business world. It should however be an individuals God given right to use illegal drugs if they choose to do so as long as they are not making impacts on other peoples lives because of this use. The only example that probably applies to this idea would be that of acasual? drug user who at times decides to use a drug when he has no other responsibilities such as work or family obligations. As soon as this drug use interferes with daily interactions, this principle would state that drug use would threaten the security or autonomy of others.
             The idea of the legalization of illegal drugs is definitely supported by John Stuart Mill's principle as long as that fine line could be drawn as to what would affect others. Mill would argue that a man living in a log cabin, 500 miles from civilization, with absolutely no contact to the rest of the world has every right to use illegal drugs if he so chooses. It is when an individual is a functioning part of a society when the question has to be asked, as to whether or not one individuals use of drugs will affect another. If use of illegal drugs could be contained to only affecting that individual, John Stuart Mill would definitely argue for the legalization of drugs. It is however this principle that states that a person should not be free to do what they please if that action threatens .
