Marijuana

            There are over 30 million illegal drug users in the world, and the United States is one of their biggest markets. There are more drug dealers in this country than there are chiropractors. Marijuana is one of the most popular illegal drugs with its largest consumers being young adults. Indeed, 35% of people between ages 12 and 18 have tried marijuana. Experimentation with marijuana is dangerous because studies show that regular marijuana smokers developed a tolerance to its effects, and that 55% of people who smoke marijuana on a regular basis move on to try harder drugs soon after. Effects of marijuana use include a general diminished ambition and motivation in the user. Moreover, use of marijuana is not only harmful to the user, but to all those with whom the user is in contact. In the long run, it may cause lung cancer and other respiratory problems to first and second hand smokers.
             However, pro-marijuana lobbying groups argue that marijuana should be legalized in order to treat terminally ill patients. Among them are AIDS sufferers who find that marijuana rouses their appetites so they can fight off dangerous extreme leanness, glaucoma victims who have reported that it has prevented them from going blind, and it also is said to relieve the severe nausea in cancer patients that often accompanies with chemotherapy and sometimes make treatments impossible.
             Seeing both sides of the issue I come to a conclusion that marijuana should be legalized in order to help people suffering from terminal diseases such as cancer, glaucoma and AIDS. Prohibition of marijuana over the past decades hasn't diminished the demand of this drug in America. I believe that marijuana is here to stay in our society and is only going through the stages that alcohol had during the prohibition era.
