Hopeless Ambition

George looked for opportunities to escape the monotony of millwork and when one came along he wasted no time grabbing it. For a while he was in business for himself and lived better than most of the people in Braddock. His whole demeanor changed when he went into business for himself. He constantly referred to himself as "a prosperous businessman". He also felt no doubt that Zuska would be willing to take in a businessman like himself. ""I bet I could have her like that. Like that." There was real satisfaction in the certainty he felt." (Bell 184). For the first time in his life he felt that he was in charge of his life. He had opportunities that the common man didn't. These opportunities, both with Zuska and the ability to save money and buy land, eventually led to the fall of his business and his return to the agonizing torment of millwork. Although the American economy allowed him to rise up for a little bit, he resented this economy that allowed him just as quickly to fall back down.
To open a business the way George did you must have certain things that others don't have. The first thing you must have is the foresight to know a good opportunity when you see one. George was a very involved person when it came to things going on around him, he always wanted to know everything and hear everyone's opinions. This curiosity led to many more opportunities that most people would never hear about, such as a butcher shop possibly being for sale. The other and more critical thing that you need is money. Men working at the mill were rarely given the opportunity to save up a significant amount of money. Whenever times were good enough to put a little money in the bank, times would be bad a gain and the account would soon be emptied. George learned about the butcher shop being for sale right around the same time he happened to have a significant amount of money in the bank. Luck was on his side and without that he never would have become an entrepreneur.
