Jacksonian Democracy


            By definition the word democracy deals with a form of government where the majority rules, a government in which the ultimate power lies in the masses. Between 1820 and 1840 Jackson's economic policies and the events that coincided with the great migration westward aided this change in power from the rich to the masses. .
             Throughout his terms as president Andrew Jackson consistently fought for the rights of the masses. He sought to take the power out of the hands of the rich and give it to the masses. With Jackson's leadership male suffrage was realized. Jackson fought to oust the entrenched office holders in the federal government and promoted a government run by the average person (spoil system). .
             President Jackson felt that the Bank of the United States was unconstitutional and dispised it because it gave power to the rich and did not benefit the poor. Jackson was devoted to the destruction of this "Monster." After firing two secretaries of the treasury that would not comply with his wishes Jackson hired Roger B. Tany, a good friend, who obediently placed federal funds in state banks (pet banks) and not the Bank of the United States. .
             Jackson's forceful attitude and strict interpretation of the Constitution won him allies in the political world and it also won him many enemies. There has never been an issue on which every man in the world agreed. Social, economic, and geographic situations affect the views of all people. Jackson caused a great number of men to come together in opposition to his political agenda. This group of anti-Jackson men led to the formation of the Wig party.
