Torre was more concerned about winning the game then trying to cover his butt.
After being fired from St. Louis, George Steinbrenner wanted to meet up with Torre in Tampa to ask him to be the General Manager for the Yankees. Torre knew what he would be getting himself into; it's a 25 hour, 13 months a year kind of job. But he could never turn the opportunity down. They signed a two-year contract , Torre recieving $1.05 million, because that's what Steinbrenner offered his last coach. At the first spring training meeting, Torre made his first speech as a Yankee Manager. "Men, every single one of my coaches has been to the World Series. I haven't! I plan to rectify that this year. I'm determined as hell to get there. One thing you can count on is that I won't manage through the media. If there's something you should know, you're going to hear it from me first. I'm going to do everything I can to eliminate tension on this team. I'll put it in simple terms for you: The one thing I'm interested in is the way we perform on the field, and I'm going to make it as tension-free as possible so that we can devote all of our energy to that."" Torre lets everyone know what he expects from the team, and doesn't hide his feelings.
In a game against Kansas, a fly ball was hit between Bernie Williams and Paul O'Neill in the outfield. Torre thought O'Neill should have caught the fly ball because Bernie couldn't get to it fast enough. Later that game Torre took O'Neill out and the media said that he was getting punished for that play. After the game, Torre saw the broadcaster in the middle of the clubhouse, and he made sure the broadcaster knew he didn't appreciate the gossip because it would potentially cause problems within the team. He showed his players he backs up his statements although getting angry.
One point that season, the team lost 4 out of 6 away games in a row. Before they were about to start another series against Oakland, Torre decided to call a red ass meeting.
