Every year in the United States, we prevent 250 cases of mental retardation due to phenylketonuria (PKU) by newborn screening and dietary treatment. (Alexander, 1998) By the Hib vaccine and the measles vaccine about 5,000 cases of mental retardation are prevented each year. (Alexander, 1998) Removing lead from the environment reduces brain damage in children. Preventive interventions such as child safety seats and bicycle helmets reduce head trauma. Early intervention programs with high risk infants and children have shown remarkable results in reducing the predicted incidence of subnormal intellectual functioning. (Alexander, 1998) .
A program that helps educate children about lead poisoning prevention is the Lead Exploration. It is a traveling exhibit that is dedicated to instructing preschool and early elementary school children about lead poisoning prevention. It is equipped with interactive displays to teach young children prevention strategies, such as washing their hands, wiping their feet at the door, eating good foods, and playing in safe areas. This project is in collaboration with the Department of Human Services, Governor's Council on Prevention of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities, and the Intragency Task Force on the Prevention of Lead Poisoning.
Train the Trainer is an ongoing project that trains agency staff and community groups throughout the state about lead poisoning prevention. They emphasize on effective communication skills. The purpose of this program is providing educators in the community who supply lead prevention education in their community. Getting the Lead Out , a project provides information to day care providers and other community groups throughout the Southern region of New Jersey.
